FUTURO (abbr, Families United to Utilize Regional Opportunities)
(Our Vision - Our Mission; Our Children - Our FUTURO)
They are the hope of the families, businesses, and other united partners of the Middle Rio Grande region. Our Vision: to join hands within our ranks and across the region; to reap a harvest of healthy, happy families ready to work; to build thriving businesses and livable neighborhoods; to embody the "can-do" frontier spirit needed for a bold and new and vibrant tomorrow.
We've made a move! You can find us now at the Middle Rio Grande Workforce Center at 216 West Main Street, Suite B (the Middle Rio Grande Workforce Center). We're looking forward to visiting with you and helping you with your housing or business needs.
Not only has the office location and web site design changed, however; we have also changed the direction that FUTURO is taking as an organization. As the Empowerment Zone designation is coming quickly to a close, the organization has had to shift its philosophy from serving all the economic and community needs of its service area, to working with first time home-owners and existing and new small businesses. The staff is still here to help, but now we are focusing our efforts on specific types of economic and community development.
FUTURO Communities, Incorporated was formed as a non-profit organization to implement a five-county strategic plan for change that would see our region into the twenty-first century. The strategic plan was the blueprint for the future success of the region. A truly grass-roots effort, it took many months of hard work and dedication on the part of many people from throughout the region to formulate the plan. Alone it stood little chance of being an effective tool for implementing change in the depressed economies. In combination with the Empowerment Zone designation, however, FUTURO stood ready to actualize the many needs specified within the strategic plan.
In the years since being designation an Enterprise Community, FUTURO's efforts have been toward supporting local projects serving the needs of a limited number of individuals in each county. With the designation of Empowerment Zone, however, everything changed; the Federal Tax Benefits available to the FUTURO region had a long-reaching affect on the future of the economies of those communities within or near the existing Empowerment Zone boundaries. Those affects included stimulation of new industrial and commercial growth, strengthening of existing small businesses, new job opportunites, improvements in housing and many, many other recognized needs, including an overall improvement in the outlook for the future of the region.
